What was said on rent reviewsToronto Star - October 10, 1975 A statement by John Rhodes Tuesday follwing this appointment as Ontario housing minister has caused confusion among opposition parties and the public on the government's stand on what to do about rent gouging by landlords. He said he was not convinced that rent review boards proposed by the govenment would work and he was considering alternaitves. Both he and Primier William Davis said Wednesday they did not disagree on the issue. Here are other statements made by the two men on rent review boards, which were a major issue in the Sept. 8 election campaign: "We will amend the Unconsionable Transactions Act to allow (rent) review boards to apply for court action against any landlord they feel is gouging." -- Davis, Sept. 2 "The rent will be what the board determnes is fair. That way tenants will be protected." -- Davis, Sept. 8 From the Star, Sept. 25: "Premier William Davis said yesterday he expects the Legislature will pass his minority government's proposal for rent review boards with little change in its original concept. `We're looking at the mechanics of the legislation now, 'Davis said." "I don't know why the press is so hung up on the Unconscionable Transactions Act and rent review boards. Because something is said during an election campaign, doesn't mean there isnt' anything else." -- Rhodes, Oct. 9. Visit the Toronto Star newspaper | |
