ONTARIO: Rental housing crisis looms, group says

Canadian Press - November 5, 1999

TORONTO — Hundreds of thousands of tenants are at risk of losing their homes in communities across Ontario as a result of a "full-blown [rental] housing crisis," a group of former housing ministers said yesterday.

A study by the members of Housing Again (former federal housing minister Alan Redway, former Ontario housing minister John Sweeney and former Ottawa mayor Marion Dewar), says the federal and provincial governments have shirked their responsibility to build affordable housing, putting lower-income tenants at risk.

The group says the lack of federal and provincial help with affordable housing places an "impossible burden" on municipalities.
