Hydro vs Coal: Facts at-a-glance

Ontario's incoming Liberal government promises to shut down the province's coal-fired generating stations by 2007, but skeptics say the province needs the power. In a report released Oct. 20, the Ontario Clean Air Alliance says the plan can work.

Some details:

  • Coal-fired generation capacity: 7,557 MW (about one-third of the total)

  • New natural gas capacity: 2,921 MW
  • Sithe Energies: 1,695 MW (Possibly in service 2005-2007)
  • Brighton Beach: 578 MW (Under construction. In service 2004)
  • Portlands Energy Centre: 550 MW (Possibly in service 2006-2007)
  • Imperial Oil: 98 MW: (Under construction. In service 2004)
  • Expected extra nuclear power: 2,055 MW
  • Pickering A Unit 4: 515 MW
  • Bruce A Unit 3: 770 MW
  • Bruce A Unit 4: 770 MW
  • Possible new hydro-electic generation: Up to 1,500 MW

  • Possible new wind generation: 3,000 MW
